As we begin a new decade and look forward to all that 2020 has in store for LW, we look back at the past year and the fun we had together. If you missed it, check out our 2018 Culture Round-up. We believe in our culture at LW and the way it fosters friendships and camaraderie that extend beyond business hours. It’s not uncommon to hear employees joking around together or catching up by the break room coffee maker. Similar to last year, we reminisced on all the ways our team got the opportunity to spend quality time with their coworkers. Here’s our 2019 round-up:
There are several events that we see year after year here at LW, such as our ever-popular potluck lunches, fun spirit days, and our company picnic. Old employees look forward to them, while new employees get to hear stories in anticipation.
This year we celebrated the 20th anniversary of LW by throwing a huge shindig for our employees, their families, several of our closest manufacturing partners – both vendors and customers, and even past employees, all that have had an impact on the company. It was a night full of fun conversations, food, drinks, music and a beautiful view of the Kansas City skyline from the event space. You can read more about the night in our 20th Anniversary blog post.
The annual company picnic is always a favorite, and this year was no different. It was a rainy day, but that didn’t keep employees from gathering at the park to enjoy Jack Stack bbq, sample sweet treats from the dessert contest, jump around in the bounce house, and try their luck in the raffle drawings. We also got the chance to honor two employees who had their ten-year anniversaries with the company this year. If you want to hear more about the fun had, check out the company picnic blog post.
Culture Spotlight Videos
We might be slightly biased, but we think we have a pretty great culture here at LW. This year we decided to capture the culture by filming some employee spotlight videos. To say we had a little fun with this would be an understatement. There was a karaoke night, real life fruit ninja, and a LW tattoo. All of these came together to create some really fun videos to get to know both our employees and company culture better.
Employee Volunteer Program
We continue to live out Our Mission: to use our everyday, ordinary lives to serve others, by working together to help our community and building a culture that fosters relationships that go beyond working hours. In doing this, we have built the Employee Volunteer Program (EVP) to partner with local charities and organizations to make a difference in our community. EVP events take place primarily over the weekend, so it’s an opportunity to serve others while getting to know fellow coworkers outside the office. Employees are encouraged to invite their families, friends, and neighbors to participate in the events as well.
Last year, we revisited several of same events we have done over the year, such as Food Pack Parties with Something to Eat, served lunch at City Union Mission, painted a house with Habitat for Humanity, and served as personal shoppers at the Cross-Lines Christmas store, just to name a few. We also hosted brand new event with organizations that we hadn’t volunteered with in the past, such as Giving the Basics (which is right down the street from LW) and the Humane Society of Greater KC. We are excited to continue to stay involved with these organizations, as well as get involved with new organizations in the coming year.
Needless to say, we had another great year together as employees working to improve our culture. When you work hard, you get to play hard, which is evident in the way we see the positive impact fun activities can have on the workplace, and, in turn, impacts how well our team works together.
We’re always looking to grow our team.
If you think you’d fit in with our culture, we would love for you to join us!
